Volunteer Spotlight: High School Sophomore, Sriyansh Shah

We want to thank Sriyansh Shah, a sophomore at Centennial High School, whose Facebook fundraiser collected $2530 for Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center!

Sriyansh was introduced to the foundation through his dad, and he got interested in raising funds after discovering how many women die in Nepal due to improper cancer care. The most common female cancer in Nepal is cervical, which can be attributed to a lack of preventive measures and insufficient education on human papillomavirus (HPV). Breast cancer is the second most common, which is also typically diagnosed late-stage, creating a large burden on the health care system.

To raise funds, Sriyansh set up a Facebook fundraiser. His process involved writing a persuasive message that people could connect with under his call-for-donations post.

“I had to keep editing to ensure that it was something I meant and not something I just said,” Sriyansh explains.

He posted his message on Facebook and shared it on his social media platforms.

“I was going through a stressful time in my first year of high school, and I did not have the mental stamina to set up the donation and do all of my school work, “ Sriyansh shares. “However, I managed to pull through and make time by thinking about all the people who are dying because they cannot get proper medical assistance.”

In his message, Sriyansh explained that his grandma’s cancer diagnosis in Nepal showed him the challenges of healthcare in low-middle-income countries. His family had to rush from the United States to Nepal to support his grandma and eventually take her to India for treatment.

“I think It is important to support the Binaytara Foundation because putting in a little bit of time and effort can help save the lives of many people in Nepal,” Sriyansh shares.

His donations will support the mammogram services at Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center in Janakpur, Nepal. Sriyansh told us that he plans to volunteer his time and conduct a similar fundraising project in the summer.
